Angry Lion of Society

Poem Background

As with most of the stuff I’m sharing, this was written in the 1979-80 school year as part of my Creative Writing (English 3101-1) class with Dr. Uma Parameswaran.

Angry Lion of Society

by Warren Wojnowski

You always warned me that one day you’d go
But I never heard you when you told me so
You’re so emotional, just like a child
Left to run free out in the wild
You say I’m sloppy and vicious and crude
And you know you really hurt me good
Well that’s okay, just stay away
I’m not playing your game of shame again

You’re the angry lion of society
Always crying for redemption in your stinking sobriety
We’d all be dead if we lived in constant fearful piety
Just throw all those beliefs away and smile on me

So you left me and hit the road
Screaming that no one can turn lead to gold
Well, I didn’t and don’t care what you say
I still like living my life this way
So I drink a lot and smoke some pot
At least I don’t live half my life lying in a cot
So I’m not rich and famous and grand
But, at least I know who I am

You’re the angry lion of society
Always crying for redemption in your stinking sobriety
We’d all be dead if we lived in constant fearful piety
Just throw all those beliefs away and smile on me
